Developing and implementing effective alcohol regulations is a monumental task. TIPS is trained in all 50 states and over 40 different countries. Through our partnerships with regulators across the nation, we have experience in developing roadmaps that will lead to common-sense regulations that benefit both the community and the businesses you serve.

In addition, TIPS stands out among other alcohol server training programs due to our extensive experience and the additional resources we offer beyond the training. As part of our training support, we offer access to a database of State Alcohol Laws & Regulations. The database contains a state-by-state breakdown of the laws and regulations governing the promotion, sale, and service of alcohol beverages, and highlights any special liability pertaining to specific jurisdictions. Finally, TIPS is a dynamic skills-based training program designed to prevent alcohol abuse, drunk driving and underage drinking by enhancing the fundamental “people skills” of servers, sellers and consumers of alcohol. TIPS gives individuals the knowledge and confidence they need to recognize potential alcohol-related problems and effectively intervene to prevent alcohol-related tragedies. Each of our TIPS programs is tailored to a specific setting where alcohol is sold, served or consumed.

There are two levels of TIPS certification: trainer and participant. To become a TIPS trainer, an individual must successfully complete a two-day workshop. Trainers certified through the two-day workshop are qualified to instruct all TIPS programs. Participants who successfully complete the two- to five-hour sessions are TIPS-certified for three years. TIPS is a practical, common sense approach to serving, selling and consuming alcohol responsibly in any setting. TIPS training helps people who are drinking from hurting themselves, injuring others or damaging property.

In addition to their responsibility to approve program providers, many regulators also offer training themselves by becoming TIPS certified trainers within their jurisdictions.  This direct training role allows regulators to ensure a consistent message about the expectations for responsible service and a correct interpretation of the particular laws & regulations in effect for the jurisdiction.

Managing a Statewide Program

First, the state or jurisdiction needs to decide what programs and curriculum they want to recognize. There are many factors to consider when choosing an alcohol server training program.

Second, our regulatory partners tell us that the management of statewide alcohol server/seller training represents a huge administrative burden and that compliance tracking usually falls short. The quality of a state’s data management system can largely determine how successful an alcohol server and seller training program will be. We offer STATE CERTIFICATION MANAGER™ as a compliance tracking tool, regardless of which training program is implemented by the operators in your state.

STATE CERTIFICATION MANAGER™ is a web-based tool that helps states and jurisdictions implement a server/seller training program without incurring the cost of developing and maintaining the infrastructure needed to support it. Our STATE CERTIFICATION MANAGER™ provides the ability to:

  1. Check a trainer’s certification status and history
  2. Review all training sessions conducted (Sort by trainer, server/seller, date, zip code, or area code.)
  3. View specifics of each trainer’s sessions (length and size of session, participant feedback, participant scores)
  4. Monitor training activity throughout your region (by licensee, county, city, etc.)
  5. Export data into an internal LMS.

Certification Manager
Our web-based tool, Certification Manager, allows trainers and establishments to track the training activity. TIPS trainers receive a complimentary subscription to Certification Manager as part of their certification. Organizations can also subscribe to the service and manage their TIPS training across an entire region.

As part of their Certification Manager subscriptions, trainers have access to our Training Management system. These tools allow trainers to advertise their sessions and respond to individuals seeking TIPS training through our referral system.

Regulatory Database
Our Laws and Regulations database is a comprehensive and up-to-date listing of all state and local laws and regulations that govern the sale, consumption, and promotion of alcohol beverages.
